I jumped into the Student Affairs profession less than a month after graduating from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Looking to live and work in the Bay Area, I found a position at a small non-profit private art and design college by happenstance. California College of the Arts (CCA) was a very big change in scene and in responsibility, especially with CCA’s tiny student population and the nature of CCA being a private institution. Nevertheless, I became determined to be the best and only Residential Life Coordinator I could be while at CCA. I took a non-traditional route by deciding to work full-time while completing an online Masters of Education in Educational Organization and Leadership through the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. At such a small private institution, I felt the need to reach out to other Student Affairs professionals to seek input and guidance on various issues that a young professional at a small institution could encounter. Finding a dearth of professional outlets, I jumped onboard the CCPA leadership team and a way to reach out to other professional at private institutions who may feel that the big public institutions have dominated the conversation at large student affairs organizations.
As the private colleges and universities representative, I have four main goals:
1. Create a database of student affairs professionals who work at private institutions in California
2. Develop tailored professional development opportunities for young professional working at private institutions in California.
3. Increase visibility of Californian private college and university student affairs professional at the national organizations.
I can not do this alone. Your help is needed. You can begin by becoming a part of CCPA! Your thoughts, opinions, and feedback are very much needed.
