The method may in future help comatose and locked-in patients communicate.

By Harry Mok

A residence hall fire alarm is pulled as a drunken prank in the middle of the night. A fellow resident, who happens to be gay, witnesses it and confronts the culprit as the building is evacuated. In the exchange of words, the prankster utters a pejorative term for a homosexual man in a profanity-laced tirade.

Fortunately, the situation was just part of a role-playing exercise. Twenty-three student affairs staff members, from all 10 University of California campuses, took part in training for restorative justice, a conflict resolution process that UC is considering for use when dealing with incidents of intolerance or hate, particularly for conduct that, while offensive, may not violate any laws or policies.

Yet UCSF is attached like Velcro to the other campuses, required to spend millions of dollars to help support them and send officials to countless meetings where students protest rising tuition and regents debate educational policy.

USF is in the geographical center of San Francisco. Our students benefit from the city, and its’ great diversity of race, class, and income level. There is no better place in the world to pursue graduate education than San Francisco.

The M.A. in Organization & Leadership with a Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA)program prepares professionals working in or aspiring toward practitioner positions in Student Affairs. The program focuses on understanding issues of access and equity in higher education and the unique experiences and problems facing underrepresented groups. In addition, students learn to think critically about the complexities involved in transforming organizations and programs in order to achieve equitable outcomes for all students.

As part of the program, students are trained as practitioners through required practica experiences in a variety of university departments. In addition, practical experience can be gained through optional paid internship opportunities in the Division of Student Life. Students in these positions devote approximately 20 hours a week to one student affairs department. The compensation package is competitive and may include housing or a stipend.

To be considered for admission and assistantship opportunities, prospective students are encouraged to apply no later than March 1. If you or prospective students have questions about the program, please contact Dr. Christopher Thomas at cnthomas(at)usfca.edu or Dr. Uma Jayakumar at jayakumar(at)usfca.edu. For more information about the Division of Student Life, including internships and practica, contact Dr. Gregory V. Wolcott at gvwolcott(at)usfca.edu.
