Update at 12:10 p.m. ET: UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof confirms to KCBS-TV that UC police put concrete barriers in place this morning at the two vehicle entrances to the property.

The protesters want the land in Albany used for an urban farm and accuse the school of planning to develop the site. Mogul denies that and tells KCBS the “door remains open” for the protesters to accept a compromise solution.

Governor Brown is set to release his revised State Budget on Monday, May 14. At this critical time in California’s budget process, the Governor and legislative leaders need to hear from UC supporters that the University of California has been cut enough: It’s time to begin reinvesting.

I am asking members of the UC family and our advocates who object to further cuts to UC’s state budget to take action and contact leaders in Sacramento.

If you are concerned about UC’s level of state support, please contact the Governor and the legislative leaders of both parties and urge them to provide additional funding for UC in the 2012-13 budget and to support a long-term funding plan for the University.

Over the last several months, members of the University’s senior leadership team and I have been in talks with the Brown administration to secure long-term, adequate funding. While we have reached conceptual agreement on the elements of a long-range plan, we need help to encourage Governor Brown to include the first installment of this funding plan in his revised budget and to ask legislative leaders to support this action.

It is crucial for California lawmakers to commit to reliable, predictable funding levels for UC and to end the cycle of repeated budget cuts and disinvestment in higher education.

On May 1, I joined the leaders of the California State University and the California Community Colleges systems and scores of alumni, faculty, staff and students in Sacramento to advocate for a long-overdue reinvestment in higher education.

And I will join UC Regents and students in Sacramento next week to urge that lawmakers make long-term UC funding a budget priority.  We need to send a strong message to the state’s political leaders to spare UC from cuts in the 2012-13 budget and to recommit to making higher education a state priority.

Expressing your views on political matters, including the state budget, is a personal choice.  But I do encourage you to take action to support what you believe in.

CCPA Leadership Team and Members at ACPA Showcase

The ACPA Convention in Louisville challenged student affairs professionals to reflect on how we can continue to learn, inspire, and connect in Possibility City also known as Louisville, KY. This was an opportune time for CCPA to reflect on this past year and think about the road ahead.  CCPA had a very successful year and it was a great moment to celebrate the year at the annual ACPA Convention held in Louisville, KY. At the annual business, I presented the year in review and discussed the ways that CCPA is further reaching its goal of addressing student affairs professionals’ needs in the state of California. It was a great opportunity to reflect on the past year, recognize the outstanding work of the leadership team this past year, and look forward to this next year of accomplishing goals to continue implementing the strategic plan that was set forth in July 2011. I am truly honored to have served in this role as President this past year and am confident that CCPA will only continue to grow and flourish to further support student affairs/higher education professionals in California. CCPA also hosted a table at the ACPA Showcase and met with current and prospective members. Members got to take photos with our “sun” and grab some awesome swag like buttons, postcards, and magnets. Our final event was the West Coast Social which we co-hosted with the Arizona CPA and Colorado CPA. We has over 75 people in attendance and recognized CCPA Award recipients as well as outgoing leadership and our sponsored program presenters. All in all, ACPA was a moment to celebrate the past year of success and “Create Possibilities” for an even better CCPA future!

Annette M. Spicuzza, the embattled UC Davis police chief who came under fire in last week’s report on what led to the Nov. 18 pepper spray incident on campus, has decided to retire, according to an email statement received by The Bee today.

“My 27 years in law enforcement have been dedicated to the ethical and committed service to the departments and communities I have been proud to be a part of,” the statement read. “For the past seven years, I have accomplished many good things for both the Police Department and community here at UC Davis; and am grateful to those of you who have remembered this.

“As the university does not want this incident to be its defining moment, nor do I wish for it to be mine. I believe in order to start the healing process, this chapter of my life must be closed.”
